Making A Choice Between Oil and LPG Boilers

Making A Choice Between An Oil Or An LPG Boiler

For many home owners throughout the UK, there are different options available when it comes to the type of boiler you can install. If your home is connected to the electricity and gas mains, you do have plenty of options open to you. But for the 4 million homes throughout the UK that are not connected, you are left with only a few choices available. You can get some insightful information on the different options available on the Energy Saving Trust website. However, the two main choices that you have available are fitting either an LPG or an Oil Boiler, so out of these two options, which one is the better choice?

Which Is the Cheaper Fuel?

To be honest, there is not a lot of difference in the cost of either fuel when compared together. Using either an Oil or LPG Boiler is more expensive than if you were connected to the main supply as a mains connection works out to be around 3.5p/kW. In comparison, the cost of LPG is around 6.5-7p/kW while the cost of Oil is slightly cheaper at around 6p/kW.

Whichever system you decide to use, it is important to note that you will also need to store your fuel supply. Many companies have options available to you for this but it does tie you into using the company’s services as they often will not let another company’s fuel in their storage tank. As such, it is important to shop around and choose a supplier with an excellent reputation.

The Cost Of The Boiler

The Cost Of The Boiler

There can be a significant difference between the costs of Oil or an LPG boiler, and you will also need to factor in the installation of the storage for your fuel as well as the cost of fitting the boiler. The average Oil boiler can cost around £1400 with installation being as much as £3000 including the installation of the storage tank. An LPG boiler will cost in the region of £800 and the cost of installation including the storage tank is typically around £4000. Each has an expected lifespan of around ten years so are comparable in this respect.

Ease Of Access

When you are looking to choose between these two options, one important consideration that you need to take into account is the ease of which you can have the fuel delivered. The costs of the boilers and the installation is similar as well as the expense of the fuel itself. So really, you will need to make your decision based on the ease that you can get your fuel delivered to you especially during the winter months when you will need it the most.

Shop Around

As with anything else, whatever system you decide to install, you will want to shop around extensively for a supplier and installer as well as a reputable supplier of your fuel. Make sure that you research each company and check out their online reputation which will help you to make your decision. If at all possible, you may wish to leave it until the summer before you replace your boiler as you may get a better price on installation as there is a higher demand during the winter months. Doing your homework will ensure that your home is nice and warm with plenty of hot water throughout the year!

The True Cost That You Pay For Deferring Plumbing Problems

The Cost Of Deferring Plumbing Problems

There are many reasons why people put off basic preventive maintenance tasks such as plumbing. However, whatever those reasons may be, it could end up costing you a lot more time and money in the long run. Rather than trying to forget about those leaky taps or toilets, it is best to deal with the problems as they arise and you can make yourself quite a saving!

The Cost Of A Leaky Tap

The American EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) estimates that an average leaky faucet could lose up to 10,000 gallons of water per year. With the cost of services increasing, this could hit you in your wallet quite hard. 10,000 gallons of water is enough to do about 270 loads of washing using your family washing machine, which should help you to put it in context. Someone has to pay for all of that water!

There are other effects as well as financial, as a build-up of water can cause things such as mould or damp. A build-up of water outside the home can also cause structural problems if it is allowed to fester. If you have a wooden home, then water can cause a lot of damage, and replacing critical timbers in your home can prove to be quite expensive. So by delaying in acting on any plumbing problems that arise, you will end up spending a lot more money than you would if you had addressed the problem right away.

Prevention Is Better Than Cure

With modern homes, you tend not to have as many problems, but some older homes will require regular maintenance to your pipes and water systems to keep them running correctly. Whenever you detect a leak, you will want to get it fixed as quickly as possible. So if you have home insurance, make sure to get on to your provider straight away. Get a qualified and reputable plumber to come and fix the problem and also investigate if there are any underlying root causes.

Get a qualified and reputable plumber

Usually, the quicker you address a problem, the easier it is to fix, so by having your water system regularly maintained you could fix minor issues before they become major. For the cost of a few rubber washers and an hour’s time of a plumber, you can save yourself a substantial amount of money, as well as other potential headaches.

Some of the minor jobs such as replacing washers you can even do yourself with only basic DIY knowledge, and there is a wealth of information freely available on the internet which you can use as your guide. For anything major, you should consult a plumbing expert and have them fix any issues that you have. The last thing that you want to do is to make the problem worse by bodging a DIY job and increasing the cost to fix it!

With regular preventative maintenance, done either by yourself or a professional, you can keep your home nice and snug and hassle free, and help to prevent potential major catastrophes.

Is Your Boiler Energy Efficient?

Is your Boiler energy efficient? Save money with a new A-rated Boiler

Your boiler is one of the most expensive items in your home, contributing roughly 55 percent of your annual spend on energy bills. It is therefore imperative to ensure your boiler is energy efficient. An old G-rated boiler is not only more likely to incur costly breakdown expenses but will be adding hundreds of pounds to your energy bills annually.

Replacing your old gas boiler with an A-rated energy efficient boiler, like the Vaillant Ecotec Pro 28Kw, will improve your heating control and will significantly reduce your home’s carbon emissions, saving you hundreds of pounds annually.

Why are new boilers more efficient?

There are several reasons why modern boilers are more efficient but the main reason is that these newer boilers are all condensing boilers. Well maintained boilers burn fuel efficiently, but inevitably lose some heat in the hot gases that escape up the flue. As a condensing boiler has a bigger heat exchanger, it recovers more heat and sends cooler gases up the flue, making it more energy efficient.

The Honeywell Evohome: Revolutionary Home Heating Control

“Have you heard of Honeywell Evo Home?” When people are asked this question they often reply “No”. You know you have seen it somewhere but you can’t quite remember where. To clear it up, Honeywell Evohome is a state of the art heating system. The Honeywell Evohome is their first foray into the public eye and they have decided to announce their arrival with this revolutionary new home heating concept.

Honeywell Evohome is a complete heating control system that allows for manual control of individual zones within your home. This is achieved in one of two ways, either via a dedicated touchscreen panel or via your Apple or Android smartphone. The difference between Evohome and traditional systems is where the temperature of your house was taken from a single thermostat, Evohome depends on each radiator communicating with the central control unit.
Evohome also offers direct control with physical dials on each of the radiators. The timer can be set for multiple times in each of the different zones. If you like your bedrooms to be warm when you climb into bed but the kitchen must only be warm in the morning it is relatively easy to set up.
Honeywell recommends that you have the system professionally installed by a heating technician. A heating technician could be anyone from your local plumber to the local electrician, but they have been trained by Honeywell and it is best to leave it to the experts.

JB Heating are proud to be part of the Honeywell Evohome Installer Network. Join the revolution and give us a call for more information.

Why It’s Important To Get Your Boiler Serviced In Summer

The Importance of Getting Your Boiler Serviced In The Summer
Boilers are known to break down at the most inopportune times. Sod’s law dictates it will likely happen when the weather is at its coldest, such as the middle of winter, when you are most reliant on your central heating.

Boilers commonly break down when the heating is turned on for the first time after the summer. As the boiler is used more regularly, it is being worked harder. Without regular servicing and repair, you could be left in quite the predicament if your boiler was to break down.

This is one of the main reasons why it is important to get your boiler serviced before winter arrives. It’s always a good idea to regularly service your boiler, ideally once a year, if it’s an older model.

It is generally recommended to get your boiler serviced once a year to ensure that the boiler is in a safe and working condition. If you’ve not already had yours serviced, make it a top priority. Don’t wait until your boiler breaks down before you give it a thought or it could end up costing you much more in the long run.

In the unfortunate event of a boiler breakdown, make sure that you do not attempt to fix the boiler yourself. Only use a professional OFTEC or Gas Safe registered engineer.

JB Heating Services employ a team of fully qualified and experienced OFTEC and Gas Safe registered engineers. We are open 24 hours, 7 days a week. We’re always at hand to help you in any boiler or plumbing emergency. Just give us a call on 01706 231 894.
